A Fresh Dille

heading east, east, east.

Posted in FAMILY, TRAVEL by clairedille on June 6, 2010

In just a few days I will be going to the one place that I know more than any other, the place my grandfather bought for his family on the little island of Martha’s Vineyard when my mother was a child. Since I was born, I have spent many summers on the island, but in the last couple years, I’ve spent only a few days. Last summer, I didn’t make my way onto the island until labor day weekend and this year I am determined to visit as early as possible. You see, I prefer the island before all the tourists arrive for the high season. The early months may not be as warm and all the summer goings-on might not be possible, but I know that V and I will have a great time when arrive Wednesday night.

If rain surprises us while we are cooped up in the small shingled summer home, we will read our book about dSLR cameras, hopefully while playing with the new toy we hope to purchase before heading east. Card games and Clue will be played and I will show V a favorite morning walk down the dirt road that returns along the beach.

The favorite island farmer’s market opens for the first time this season on Saturday and features all “island grown” produce.

Although there is an alpaca herd stand at the market, I hope we can fit in time to visit the farm.

I’ll take V to the places my parents have always gotten seafood on the island each summer. At the small beach shack with a menu of friend clams, oysters, and scallop, he might be delighted with the seafood his northern california heart craves.

Of course, there are a few other things I love about this place.

sunsets.

the same summer furniture that resides in the summer home from when my grandmother first designed it in the 60’s.

farmer’s market flowers.

our weathered shingled home.

silly flea market finds.

the black dog…tavern, cafe, & bakery…

There will be many more activities along the lines of kayaking, canoeing, reading on the beach, hiking, and the Flying Horses (my favorite summer activity growing up was reaching for the rings and trying to fill each finger in hopes of winning the brass ring for a free ride).

Tomorrow I will be back to post about some simple eats I’ve been consuming. Unfortunately, my love affair with the Canon Rebel had to come to a close so the shots aren’t quite the same. This is why I am eagerly awaiting a new dSLR to play with and to learn all the things I wish I already knew about photography.

Other things:

-What is one of the places that you love the most? As I wrote the other day, traveling is something that is most important to my own well-being. However, places like New York and Martha’s Vineyard will always be closest to my heart. Memories just make them sweeter.

-Do you ever fear that someone won’t love a place as much as you? Do you feel like idealizing a place and describing it to others may build it up to be better than it turns out? The other night at dinner, my father told V all about the island and his first experience when he went there with my mother at the beginning of their relationship. He made it seem like the “perfect” place and I have a slight fear that V may not love it as I do. He is used to the west coast, and although I have lived in California in the past, I know the east coast much more. I hope he enjoys it as much, or close to as much, as I do.

Wow, what beautiful photos! My BF’s family has a house on the Cape, and it’s such a gorgeous, calming place. The place that I love most is my home in PA, where I’ve grown up since I was born. My friends know this about me, but yes, I have worried that they won’t see the beauty in it when they visit. In the end though, if our “special” places were special to everyone, we probably wouldn’t love them as much, right?

Okay, I officially want to go with you. Martha’s Vineyard looks amazing! That sunset picture is gorgeous. And I definitely second what Gabriela said about special places being special in a certain way just to you 🙂

I’ve lived in New England my whole life and never gone to Martha’s Vinyard. Is that crazy? Enjoy it!

ahh you need to go ASAP…but July/Aug are pretty crazy on that lil island so I’d recommend the end of the summer when the water is still warm, but less tourists.

You are so fortunate to be able to visit such a beautiful place, and have a family place to stay!

There are several places that I love – mostly in England (where I live) and I always feel afraid that those close to me will not feel the same as I do. Hope things work out for you.

Oh, wow. Your pictures and descriptions have me thinking that Martha’s Vineyard would be an amazing place to visit. Everything looks so cozy and charming. I know what you mean, though, about building something up to make it sound so perfect, and then being afraid that someone else won’t feel the same way; I get that way with a lot of things as well, because I’m always hoping that I can share my love of something with the people I care about. But try not to let that anxiety pull you down, because even if V doesn’t feel the same way about it as you do, I’m sure he’ll still love it if he sees that you’re having a good time.

One of the places that is really dear to my heart is my grandma’s home in Warsaw, Poland. It’s a small cottage that my grandpa built and it’s little ways outside of the big city, surrounded by gardens and meadows. I spent quite a few of my summers there as a child, and although it’s changed quite a bit, those memories are still ones I love 🙂

    • clairedille said, on June 7, 2010 at 9:23 am

I’ve never been to Poland but that sounds like such a lovely place Amanda. I definitely feel as though V will probably just enjoy the place knowing that I have had so many incredible memories there…hope so!

Great post and photos, and it’s wonderful to have a place that invokes so many memories and warm feelings. I have lots of memories of visiting various neighborhoods in New York City as a child. I also was lucky enough to visit Cape Cod for the first time last summer, and haev been longing to go back there. The National Sea Shore is incredible, with bike trails running through sand dunes. Love it there, and would love to check out Martha’s Vineyard one day too.

Wow, it looks absolutely beautiful there! I hope you enjoy your time relaxing and playing with your new toy. Sometimes we all just need a good getaway. My favorite place is my cottage on Lake Huron in Canada. It’s in the smallest little town and is right above the beach. I think there’s something quite calming about the waves and quaint towns.

    Have a lovely day!

Sounds like a beautiful place! I’m so glad all your photos loaded – they are absolutely GORGEOUS, and I don’t just mean because it’s a beautiful area. You definitely have a great eye for composition and color.
I’d probably like it more before all the tourists get there, too – being able to enjoy the beauty by yourselves.
Good luck with the big purchase! Can’t wait to see which you choose and the pictures you take 🙂

Growing up in New England, the closest I ever came to Martha’s Vineyard was Plymouth, which is beautiful in it’s own right. Loving the antique furniture and weathered shingles. My favorite places to visit: the covered bridges of Vermont (particularly route 4) and Quebec City.
